Conversation Formatting

1. Set the scene

  • Welcome the person

  • Explain purpose of meeting

  • Set timescale for the meeting

2. Give feedback carefully

  • Use AID or NVC to explain what is currently happening / has happened and how you feel and listen to them

3. Make expectations clear (agreed GOAL)

  • Explain how you'd like things to be - make clear the outcomes that you need achieving e.g. I need you to let me know every time x happens on the same day

  • Ask them how easy they think it will be to achieve what you have suggested

4. Agree a plan

  • Ask the question, ‘what else needs to happen for us to be able to sort this out?'

  • Seek their ideas first, then add yours if appropriate

  • Ask them what might get in the way of this happening what barriers there might be

  • Ask them what support they need / want from you to make things easier for them, what they need from their colleagues

5. Ask for commitment

  • Have them say what they will do, and by when and what the plan is going forward

6. Agree a review

  • Agree a suitable review date to discuss how this is working (maybe in a week or two initially)
